How to Price Your Artwork

For their latest contribution the folks at Sessions Online School of Fine Art discuss the process of pricing your artwork for sale to collectors.

Hopefully at some point your artwork will begin to price itself via the laws of supply and demand. It also helps when a gallery or agent takes you under their wing as often they have set standard prices by which their artists will receive.

When first starting out though, pricing your work may be a mystery. You don’t want to give your work away for free. At the same time you don’t want to overprice yourself and never sell anything.

Start out small, and raise prices as your reputation and buyers increase. When first starting out I recommend pricing your artwork as such – consider something you would want to have that you deemed to be as valuable to you as the painting. If the painting were gone, what other thing would replace it in your world for you. Price the painting to the equivalent of that other object - whether it be a TV, a guitar, a cell phone bill, health insurance, rent for a month, etc.

Don't under price yourself for very long. You may have spent years of hard work and hard-earned money getting your education and developing your skills to this point. Your work has value. Remember this if you find yourself getting sheepish prior to quoting a price. Through trial and error, figure out the market and what is can afford you.

It's important to not lower prices. This sends a message to a buyer, who sees your work as an investment, that it is not a sound purchase.

After a certain amount of time you will find out how much your work will sell at consistently. From there you will be able to begin to increase your prices, again checking to see if your collectors are able to keep up. Be careful and don’t go up to high too quick. You may be able to sell one painting for $30,000 to a collector too early in your career and then you will be stuck. You won’t be able to lower your prices without hurting your reputation in the market and you may never find another collector who is willing to foot the $30,000 bill again. Be careful and take your time.

Tips For Keeping a "Green" Studio (in prep for 5x5)

There are many ways to stay green in the art studio. One of the best ways is by finding a use for the scraps and leftovers that might otherwise be thrown out. This month we showed you how to cut a simple mat, but before you throw out that piece you cut out of the middle, here are a few ideas on ways you can re-use them. *Mat scraps will have a beveled edge that can be pretty sharp, it can be easily trimmed off for any of these uses.

Cut a small window to create a viewfinder for landscape painting.
Use the white (or colored) side to do quick color studies in oil or acrylic paint.
The colored side makes a great surface for oil or chalk pastel sketches.
Fortify an envelope when mailing prints or drawings.
Cut a large scrap into 2 inch wide L shapes to get ideas on cropping an image or for choosing mat colors when framing finished pieces.
Stretch watercolor paper over a scrap for a more sturdy painting surface.
Use small pieces for scrapbooking.
Mat an even smaller piece of art!

Other tips for keeping a green studio:

Use washable rags instead of paper towels.
Choose papers that are made from recycled materials.
Seek out materials that are made using sustainable practices.
Avoid toxic pigments & harsh chemical processes.
Responsibly dispose of any harmful products you do use (turpentine, mediums, etc).
Look at alternatives, like egg tempera, beeswax mediums and waterbased paints.
If you work with materials that produce vapors or dust make sure to use an air purifier to limit what gets released into the atmosphere.
Seek other people's leftovers! Material scraps from textile companies or misprinted materials from paper companies.

The more research you do and the more effort you put in will have a greater impact on the quality of life in your studio and environment at large.

Seeing that we want you to get the most out of a purchase that should be treated as an investment, we hollered at our friendKiya Babzani, co-founder of San Francisco’s denim utopiaSelf Edge, to find out exactly what you’re paying for when you drop dough on designer jeans. Read on for his denim tips, as well as which brands won’t break the bank and the truth about washing raw denim…

Complex: Whatreallyseparates the $75 tier of denim from the $200 tier?

Kiya Babzani: I’d like to think that you’re paying for better quality, but unfortunately with 99% of brands available you’re paying for the designer’s name. Often the consumer doesn’t fully see the difference until after a few months of daily wear when the denim has aged naturally.

Complex: What do you see as the next big trend in denim washes?

Kiya Babzani: We hope that raw denim continues as it is denim in its original true form. Just like you wouldn’t purchase a T-shirt with rips and holes or a watch with a cracked bezel, we see no point in buying a pair ofjeansthat looks like it’s already been worn for two years.

Complex: Give us three brands you recommend that won’t kill our budgets.

Kiya Babzani: Real Japan Blues, Iron Heart, and Flat Head are doing amazing things. These brands put so much work into the denim itself that the way their jeans look after a few months of wear is so dope you’d have to see in person to believe.

Complex: Some denim nerds say that the only to way to wash your jeans is in the ocean. What is really the best to wash your denim without messing it up? And is the “never wash your jeans” thing good advice, or all hype?

Kiya Babzani: We recommend washing jeans inside-out in cold water while using a gentle detergent. As opposed to using a dryer, line-drying works best. Ocean washes are great, but can leave a terrible smell that can only be removed by doing a hot wash. The “never wash your jeans” or “don’t wash for six months” is all hype and another way to make something extremely accessible seem more exotic to those just starting to learn about denim. At the end of the day they’re still jeans and probably the most resilient article ofclothingmost people will ever own.

Complex: What’s denim weight indicate and is that something that you should really care about?

Kiya Babzani: Denim weight is measured by square yard of loomstate denim; 14.5oz denim weighs 14.5oz per square cut yard of denim in its raw state. Denim weight is important in that it effects the way the denim will fade and age over time, but it’s just one of the many factors that goes into what makes up a certain denim. Twill-weave pattern, post-weave processes, indigo type, indigo dipping style, and the weave-cross pressure combined all determine what the denim will end up feeling and looking like after repeated wears.

Complex: Is taking denim to the tailors something only a soccer dad should do?

Kiya Babzani: We recommend only hemming jeans. We think there are so many different styles of jeans available from most manufacturers that there should be no reason to spend $300 on jeans that you’d have to take to the tailor to have modified beyond a simple inseam shortening.

Complex: What dress or casual options are still appropriate with denim? How can you rock a blazer with denim without looking like a tool?

Kiya Babzani: In the 1980s, Calvin Klein really helped pave the way for jeans to truly become a mainstream fashion staple and since then it’s been re-appropriated in every way imaginable. I’m more of a purist when it comes to jeans, I’m not a huge fan of seeing it done very dressed up with ablazer, but then again some might not like looking like they’re straight out of a 1950s’ motorcycle rebel film.

Complex: What denim fit do you recommend for sneakers?

Kiya Babzani: A great classic straight fit jean or something slightly on the slim side is great for wearing with sneakers. It makes theoutfitif the jeans are right.

Welcome back Kristen Nordham!

Hi, My name is Kristen Nordham, I am 13 years old and I’m an eighth grader at Boulder Country Day, in Boulder, Colorado. I’m raising money so that I can travel to Borneo and make a video about orangutans for my eighth grade project. I raise money lots of ways, for example, I watch my neighbors’ dogs, bake and sell pies and cakes, and have fundraisers. One of my most recent fundaraisers was an ice cream social in my neighborhood. I had my ice cream social on Saturday August 15th. I had sent out around 80 invitations, and had a great turn out! I had a water balloon toss and crafts set up for little kids, a silent auction, an OFI merchandise booth, and of course, ice cream! My friend Madeline came and helped me serve ice cream. There was a $10 entry fee, and just from that money, i raised $140! I raised about another $160 from the silent auction and altogether around $300- which was pretty good for one day! Some of the silent auction items were plants, antiques, baked goods, and a week in a beautiful house in Telluride, CO.

So Julian just got back from D.R. and I figured the best way for us to get back to business was to party! We went to two spots last night, here's a bit about both:

McSorely's:

McSorley's Old Ale House has been a gathering place, a watering hole, the subject of art and literature and even a supreme court controversy. Established in 1854 - McSorley's can boast of being New York City's oldest continuously operated saloon. Everyone from Abe Lincoln to John Lennon have passed thru Mcsorley's swinging doors. Woody Guthrie inspired the union movement from a table in the front - guitar in hand, while civil rights attorney's Faith Seidenberg and Karen DeCrow had to take their case to the Supreme Court to gain access. Women were finally allowed access to McSorley's in 1970!

Ella:

Was a little bit more of a relax session. We hung out with our long time boys DJ Stealth, Blanx and Sparrow. We chatted with Mike Stylez about art and goodtimes. And met the lovely Nina Sky sisters. Oh yeah, the bartender's beard was really cool too.

Today I attended a dope Art show in Bayshore, N.Y. The featured artist was Andres Gallardo, or Andy. The name of the show was "Faces." Andy basically explored texturized graphic paintings by using famous musicians, singers and skateboarders as subjects. The show had a great turn out and Andy said he would be down to take the show on a tour. I think he should and it would be great to have him join us this fall (more information to come). Andy is Wildboy! approved (especially the Billie Holiday).

Things never really came to us easily. We're not talking about our personal lives, We're talking about this company in particular. Where we are now is mostly due in part to trial and error. You see when you're young you get do that. The one thing about this company that we never had to question is how it has grown, not so much in the idea of employees but rather in the sense of a family. Our following is one of beautiful and fun-loving people, kind of like us. We party, educate, socialize again and we absorb all constructive criticism as if they were the company. Truthfully they are, a business wouldn't be anything without customers or in our case an extended family.

What is the paintball battle event?
The Paintball Battle Event is a networking event that brings together groups of people with similar and different backgrounds. During this event your team will have the chance to defend its name against other teams on the field. Also, you will have the opportunity to meet and network with players from other teams. Networking is the key to moving forward.

How do I know which team I’m on?
Each team will have ten players playing under one name. Each player will have a t-shirt with the team logo along with a designated staging area.

Where will this event take place?
Cousins Paintball in Coram, NY. Exit 64 off the L.I.E.

How much does this event cost?
It will cost $60 per person and includes: 500 paintballs, one rental paintball marker, one rental paintball mask, one hot dog, one hamburger, and one drink.

What else will be taking place during the paintball event?
There will be on hand video and digital photographers recording this event. All pictures and videos will be for promotional use for our up coming events. Try not to get too marked up!

What's up world? So today we spent some time with an old linoleum cut-out we had made of Boom-Orangs face back in 2006 and used it in order to fancy up our packaging a bit. You'll be seeing that soon.

We're hoping that a return of a few older methods and images can spice things up a but. People love old school stuff, you know that!

Ha, ha! That means just Crespo!

Anyways, I just got in from the Yankees game. They won, actually swept the Orioles. While there I was looking at all the sponsors and the incredible amount of advertising each of them do. I'd say it was ridiculous but it works!

I had a conversation with a friend the other night and he reminded me of the importance of advertising in the proper locations. Now don't get me wrong, social networks and blogs are the ish but they don't reach everyone like television and radio. Afterall, I still feel like Superbowl commercials go unmatched. I mean some people only watch the Superbowl for the commercials (and the party!). A more specific example which caters to the industry at hand was how L-R-G had their shirts become a staple in the wardrobe of Doug (Kevin James) in the King of Queens citcom.

We have been working on the radio thing for sometime, but mostly online radio. Shout out to AList, they are doing some wonderful things, especially those certified boys Cre8 and Spanky. We get some promotional love on there.

What's up everyone? How are you?

Wildboy! Clothing has come a long way since October of 2006. We produced a bunch of different shirts (especially Classic Tees), had a few parties (which were crazy!), and opened up a few networks (we show everyone love). Recently we've been in the studio trying to develop some new designs, color combinations and accessories (see the tie on facebook or myspace if you haven't already). We're prepping to start the mid-summer and fall season with a bang.

The New York rain has been hurting some of us, but for Team Wildboy!, that's just more time in the studio... get ready! Bang, bang! (like DJ Spanky says)

Brentwood trio sells inspirational T-shirts

Ricardo Antonio Reyes, a graduate of the Art Institute of New York City, said he always wanted to be involved with design and decided to get together with two friends to start up Chekminus, which is based in his hometown of Brentwood.

Reyes, 24, Miguel Angel Melendez, 23, and Edwin David Bolta, 25, began talking about establishing the company two years ago, they said, with plans getting serious in January 2008.

Three months later, they created a blog to help spread the word about the company, and in August, they finally made their first logo shirts, featuring the "check minus" symbol of a below-average grade in school. The trio raised capital and added their personal funds to help get the company off the ground.

"We wanted to have a creative outlet," Melendez said of the tees, which sell for $10 to $20 and are available exclusively on Long Island at Special Sauce in Bay Shore.

Chekminus' creations are "a blend of what we picked up from Brentwood and the city, but the whole idea is to expand past that," Melendez said.

Reyes recalled that the idea for the company's name came from check-minus grades for his elementary school work and thinking it was not good enough. "We always try to do things, but we come up short," Reyes said. "But we're turning that into a positive thing."

"We're inspiring people to do better and expand their horizons," Melendez said.

The company remains small, employing just the three friends, all graduates of Brentwood High School.

Even though they have other jobs, they have plans to expand to Internet sales by the end of the summer, and hope to one day add a line of women's clothing and denim to their offerings.

Still, they have no plans to become a conglomerate.

"It's not just about the money," Bolta said. "We're thinking of opening up a store, a mom-and-pop shop."

The shirts feature a Chekminus logo reminding buyers to continue aiming higher.

Other designs also encourage self-improvement: One design features hands reaching up encouraging people to reach higher.

Four designs are available, but the trio hopes to release three more by the end of the month, Melendez said.

At Special Sauce, which sells skater and urban culture accessories, manager Pete Zebak has sold out of the tees.

Most people who buy the shirts are involved with the skate, sneaker or urban culture, said Zebak, 38. "The shirts sell to anyone . . .," Zebak said, "but most basically, anyone who sees it and identifies with it."

Apple is most proud of what isn’t in MacBook.
What’s common in other notebooks is missing in the new MacBook. Take, for example, mercury used in CCFL backlights and arsenic contained in the glass of traditional LCD displays. Apple engineers have said no to both. They’ve chosen LED technology and arsenic-free glass. They’ve also said no to brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in logic boards and PVC in cables and connectors. In fact, Apple has done more than remove these toxins from the new MacBook. They’ve done the same for the rest of the new MacBook family, the Apple LED Cinema Display, every iPod, and iPhone 3G. Sometimes saying no is a good thing.
Fewer parts.
Greener parts.
The new MacBook is built with significantly fewer parts. And the parts that remain are significantly greener. Take the unibody, the foundation of the notebook itself. It’s a single piece of solid, recyclable aluminum that replaces dozens of extraneous pieces once destined for landfill.
Small volume speaks volumes.
Made from recycled material, the new MacBook packaging is 41 percent smaller than the previous generation. And that’s huge. It means less paper used for smaller boxes. It also means Apple can use fewer planes to transport the same number of products.
A more energy-efficient notebook.
Because Apple makes its own hardware and software, it’s able to create smarter products that use less electricity. To reduce energy consumption, the hard drive spins down automatically when it’s inactive. To be more efficient, the display dims when you enter a darkened room. Dido's Camping Trip to No Where...

So as we chill in the office, Dido gets the great idea/urge to go camping, so as the Wildboy! that he is, he gets ready to go. So this is what he did:

First (primero) he finds his favorite Wildboy! Hoodie, just in case it gets cold at night.

Gorillas now 'critically endangered'

GENEVA - The most common type of gorilla is now "critically endangered," one step away from global extinction, according to the 2007 Red List of Threatened Species released Wednesday by the World Conservation Union.

The Ebola virus is depleting Western Gorilla populations to a point where it might become impossible for them to recover.

Commercial hunting, civil unrest and habitat loss due to logging and forest clearance for palm oil plantations are compounding the problem, said the Swiss-based group known by its acronym IUCN.

"Great apes are our closest living relatives and very special creatures," Russ Mittermeier, head of IUCN's Primate Specialist Group, told The Associated Press. "We could fit all the remaining great apes in the world into two or three large football stadiums. There just aren't very many left."

In all, 16,306 species are threatened with extinction, 188 more than last year, IUCN said. One in four mammals are in jeopardy, as are one in eight birds, a third of all amphibians and 70 percent of the plants that have been studied.

"Life on Earth is disappearing fast and will continue to do so unless urgent action is taken," the IUCN warned.

The Western Gorilla's main subspecies — the Western Lowland Gorilla — has been decimated by the Ebola virus, which has wiped out about a third of the gorillas found in protected areas over the last 15 years.

"In the last 10 years, Ebola is the single largest killer of apes. Poaching is a close second," said Peter Walsh, a member if IUCN's Primate Specialist Group, told the AP. "Ebola is knocking down populations to a level where they won't bounce back. The rate of decline is dizzying. If it continues, we'll lose them in 10-12 years."
Female gorillas only start reproducing at the age of 9 or 10 and only have one baby about every five years. Walsh said even in ideal conditions, it would take the gorillas decades to bounce back.
The World Conservation Union also said the Yangtze River dolphin is now "possibly extinct." There have been no documented sightings of the long-snouted cetacean since 2002. An intensive search of its habitat in November and December proved fruitless but more searches are needed as one was possibly spotted in late August.
The Redheaded Vulture soared from "near threatened" to "critically endangered." The birds' rapid decline over the last eight years is largely due to diclofenac, a painkiller given to ill or injured farm cattle so they can still work. But the substance poisons the vultures when they scavenge livestock carcasses.
Only 182 breeding adults of the Gharial crocodile remain, down almost 60 percent from a decade ago. India and Nepal's crocodile has become critically endangered because dams, irrigation projects and artificial embankments have reduced its habitat to just 2 percent of its former range.
The woolly-stalked begonia is the only species declared extinct this year. Extensive searches have failed to uncover any specimens of the Malaysian herb in the last century, IUCN said.
Only one species moved to a lesser category of threat. One of the world's rarest parrots 15 years ago, the Mauritius Echo parakeet, eased back from critically endangered to only endangered. That was a result of close monitoring of its nesting sites, and supplementary feeding combined with a captive breeding and release program.
IUCN says 785 species have disappeared over the last 500 years. A further 65 are found only in artificial settings such as zoos.
The Red List, produced by a worldwide network of thousands of experts, includes some 41,000 species and subspecies around the globe.

We stood out of the studio to work on some business stuff like a business plan and inventory. Dido learned a bunch of stuff thanks to SUNY New Paltz's business program, Julian and Olga. Things have been coming a long way and are hopefully on a spectacular path. We will continue to keep you updated.

The team at WildBoy Clothing understand that humans are not the only existing life forms on this planet. When we think of our “beginning,” we tend to wonder if indeed we evolved and if so, do we have relatives in places other then the country, burbs or the city. As we take into consideration how our kind inhumanly controls the living conditions of our brothers and sisters by gentrification we are reminded of how we continue to do the same to our cousins, the apes. On our road to riches, we realize that profit and fashion is not the end of our venture. We are currently in search of an animal conservation in which we may donate proceeds to, in correspondence we hope to establish a scholarship foundation. Both charities are considered conservation because we hope to continue the preservation of all life forms.
